Mental Health Insurance Parity

Mental Health Insurance will soon be treated as medical and surgical benefits. Benefits of Addiction Treatment will yield the same rate as those of a surgical procedure. When the economic recovery package Congress was signed on 03 October Mental Health and Addiction Parity Act was a pilot in the package.

This Act will lead to radical changes in the way insurance benefits are written for those who suffer with mental health problems and addiction problems. Since 1973 when HMOS started limiting the benefits of treatment for addicts and alcoholics the number of days allowed in drug rehabilitation centers has been reduced to what it is today. Some policies allow only detox with no reimbursement of any continuing care or aftercare.

Mental Health Insurance

Despite public awareness campaigns highlighting the problems faced by people with mental health problems and the fact that nobody is immune to developing a mental illness, people with mental health problems still face unfair discrimination, the prejudice and stigma every day of their lives, not just members of the public, but also of companies, banks, employers and even when it is an insurance policy.

The truth is that any of us can develop a mental illness, regardless of our age, sex, location, occupation or social status. In fact, statistics show that at least one in four of us will experience some type of mental health problem in the space of one year. Mental health problems can be very diverse in nature and can range from mild cases of depression and anxiety in severe cases of bipolar depression and schizophrenia with the types of symptoms and the intensity of these symptoms varies from person to person. However, there are problems we face in the outside world as well.
